We DARE You!
The Uptown Haunts Tour
Victorian mansions, the lovely homes of the gentler folks — and many a disgruntled ghost! Just because the residents were of a refined ilk doesn’t mean they were beyond reproach and certainly not beyond revenge. While many of these properties are privately owned, they offer a glimpse into dark tales of murder, acts of jealousy, and the tragic deaths of loved ones. Could you bravely call one of these houses HOME?
Sin May Have Flourished at Sea Level,
But It Lived Uptown!
Sea captains, bankers, prostitutes, ship owners, sailors, doctors, brothel owners, brothers, cousins and entire families made their way west to the Quimper Peninsula and eventually called Port Townsend home. With the blend of social classes that saw The City of Dreams as a place to settle, two very distinct districts quickly emerged. Uptown is where the money lived, until the money ran out! Whether your passion is for architectural details, or the colorful stories of what happened behind closed doors, the Uptown Haunts Tour is the perfect way to explore Port Townsend’s twisted past.
Upgrade this tour to our Twice As Twisted Tour and experience both the Uptown and Downtown haunts of old Port Townsend!
This tour moves at a more leisurely pace than the Downtown Dare Tour and is best taken during daylight hours.
With a focus on the beautiful Victorian architecture of the homes in the Uptown Historic District, you’ll see a vivid picture of Port Townsend’s past.
Highlights of the tour include the Anne Starrett House, Captain Sawyer’s House and the Bell Tower (hear the story of when the bell tolls!)
Our tour guides will show you a side of the city you may never have seen, and will “map out” the Port Townsend from the turn of the century in this 120 minute tour.
Where to Meet Your Tour Guide
The Port Townsend Uptown Haunts Tour starts at our office at
718 Washington St, Studio E, located in the Basement/Studio level of the Bishop Hotel. Our guides begin promptly, but generally allow a ten minute grace period for latecomers. Anytime beyond that is not guaranteed. If you are running late or need directions, please call us at 360-390-8318 If you miss the start of the tour, the first stop is Haller Fountain at Washington and Taylor Streets. The tour will then travel up the stairs to the Bell Tower.
If you plan on driving to the Uptown Haunts Tour, you’ll find on-street parking in the area of Taylor and Washington Streets. Please plan for a few extra minutes to find parking.
If you’re staying in the Downtown Historic District, we highly recommend that you just walk. The fountain is within easy walking distance of almost anywhere in the Uptown Historic District as well. Of course, since our tours run year-round, the answer to this question depends heavily on if the weather is inclement or very cold. Please do not become a ghost on our tour due to hypothermia. lol
