We invite you to celebrate the 1st Annual Winter Solstice Luminary Festival with us in Port Townsend. When the light of the sun seems cold and far away, our goal is to brighten the longest night of the year with lanterns, fire, singing, drumming, music and dancing.
Candles were used during ancient winter solstice celebrations as a way of remembering that spring would soon come, and as we make our way through the seasonal darkness, we share the warmth of care and kindness with others in silent reverence. Through this festival, we awaken to the warmth in ourselves that leads us through the dark, cold winter.
We will meet in the front lawn of the Port Townsend Community Center where you will be given your pre-ordered locally crafted paper lantern. Then we will start our journey through the streets of Uptown Port Townsend led by a the carrier of the flame of our future, our destiny.
As we walk to the sound of a loan drummer and being led by torch light, each person symbolically takes a journey in the darkness, carrying an unlit lantern. When we arrive at the Bell Tower, a quietly shining destiny candle awaits. Participants receive the light of their own destiny, and choose spots along the stairs to place their lanterns, offering up their light to the world. One by one, the path grows more illuminated by the destiny light of each successive person. By the end, an illuminated other-world has been created on Earth to shine toward the stars. Then we watch as the Fires of Destiny descend the stairs in a silent dance. After the fire dance, enjoy coffee, tea, cider or hot cocoa at the fountain. This moment will be brought to a close at the bottom of the stairs as we all silently reflect on the light of our future.
This event is hosted by Twisted History and Velvet Revolution.
